Cornwall, ON – With tax season fast approaching, local Member of Parliament Eric Duncan (Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry) has announced the continued partnership between his Cornwall constituency office and the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). The program had been hosted by Duncan’s predecessor Guy Lauzon for the past 5 years at the former location on Pitt St.
“I am thrilled that we are able to continue to accommodate this wonderful service for our constituents. It continues to assist thousands of people at no charge who need their tax returns completed to access important government rebates like the Child Tax Benefit, HST/GST, and others. I am thankful for the dedicated volunteers who have helped make this program such a huge success over the years,” Eric Duncan said.
“The Cornwall CVITP is a group of dedicated people who volunteer their time, knowledge and abilities to help those who are in need in our community. Tax season is a very challenging but rewarding time for us,” added CVITP Coordinator Gary Christiansen.
In order to qualify for the free service, an individual must earn less that $35,000 annually or $45,000 if filing as a couple, and the returns must be simple in nature.
Complicated returns are not eligible for the program, which includes:
• self-employed or have employment expenses
• have business or rental income and expenses
• have capital gains or losses
• filed for bankruptcy in the tax year; or
• completing a tax return for a deceased person
The volunteer-based clinic is being hosted at MP Duncan’s new constituency office at 691 Brookdale Avenue, Unit C (in the International Business Plaza just south of the traffic circle). The volunteers will be available beginning on Tuesday, February 25th and will be open daily (Monday-Friday) from 9:30am till 3:30pm while the main constituency staff and services are open with their regular 8:30am-4:30pm hours.
