CORNWALL, ON – Local Member of Parliament Eric Duncan (Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry) issued the following statement on the news that Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement has been appointed to the Senate of
Canada.
“I would like to offer my congratulations to Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement on her appointment today to the Senate of Canada.
It was certainly a surprise to learn of this news, but Bernadette’s professional and personal experience, and local support from the citizens of Cornwall over 15 years is certainly respectable and her experience speaks for
itself.
I have always worked well with Bernadette on local federal issues, and I know that this relationship will continue in her new role.
While her resume and record of accomplishments in municipal government and in the legal community is certainly commendable, it is important to respectfully note that this appointment breaks the Prime Minister’s promise of appointing non-partisan Senators, as Ms. Clement was twice a candidate for the Liberal Party of
Canada.
I look forward to welcoming Bernadette to Parliament Hill and commit to working with her and all colleagues in Ottawa for the betterment of Eastern Ontario”.
